The quiz, entitled “A Contemporary of Brancusi: Milita Petrascu,” focused on celebrated Romanian artists, the famous sculptor Constantin Brancusi and one of his students, the well-known Milita Petrascu. We have received as many as 199 correct answers, which is an impressive figure considering the short duration of the quiz, only one month. Thank you for your participation!

As you may already known the Grand Prize is a 7-day (6-night) full-board stay for one RRI listener, in the last half of August 2014, in Gorj County, the home place of sculpture giant Brancusi. The winner will have a chance to see Brancusi’s works in Targu Jiu, the artist’s home, as well as a variety of other cultural, tourist and historical attractions in the area.

The competition was organized jointly with the “Constantin Brancusi” Municipal Cultural Centre in Targu Jiu, the Targu Jiu Town Hall and the Gorj County Council. And, to encourage as many of you as possible you to take part in this quiz, the organizer decided to cover the cost of your airplane ticket to Bucharest!

The answers to the questions were included in our broadcasts, as well as on RRI’s Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ profiles. Before announcing the winners, let’s take a look back at the questions you were invited to answer:

- Where was Milita Petrascu born? The correct answer was: Milita Petrascu was born in late 1892 in Chisinau, currently the capital city of the Republic of Moldova.

- When did Milita Petrascu start working in Brancusi’s workshop in Paris? The answer was 1919.

- What artistic movement in Romania did Milita Petrascu join in the 1920s? The correct answer was the Romanian inter-war avant-garde movement (including groups like “Contimporanul,” “Grupul nostru,” and “Criterion”)

- What famous works by Constantin Brancusi can be seen in Targu Jiu? The answer was: the “Avenue of Heroes” sculpture compound, devoted to the Romanian soldiers who lost their lives in WWI and made up of The Gate of Kiss, the Endless Column, the Table of Silence and the Stool Alley, positioned on a 1,275-m long west-east axis. Completing the compound is the St. Peter and Paul Church.

Debaki Biswas, from India, wrote: “I have been deeply moved by Constantine Brancusi's monumental work and about the access to metaphysical concepts - Time, Space and the Axis-Mundi through it.  I am also really spellbound to learn that this real lover of Fine arts did not love fame nor did he ever seek it. This is quite an uncommon quality in this materialist world. He was an austere man who was deeply engrossed with his arts only. One of his renowned students Milita Petrascu became an accomplished portraitist and created portraits and busts of Romanian celebrities including George Enescu on whom a contest was recently organized by RRI in which I have won a prize. These extraordinary characters of human lives have attracted and inspired me to take part in this Competition, as I want to visit their homes, their studios and see their great creations with my own eyes.”

Art really tells the rich history of a particular place and we express our thoughts and view through Art, with famous Artists like Milita Petrascu and Constantin Brancusi that have contributed to rich history of Romania, it will give me the opportunity to see the various art works that have be done by Romania Artist. I listened to RRI on short wave, because it gives me the access to know more about Romania culture and Europe at large. RRI also gives up to date information on social, economic, education and sport news. I always wake to listen to RRI. Listening to RRI has been part of me for many years.”

Here is what our listener from India, Adita Prithika, wrote: “I was 15 when I first heard RRI on my short wave radio and as I had mentioned in my last email, I was really fascinated to learn that Radio Romania is one of the very few European broadcasters available on shortwave in India. I used to listen to RRI every morning, while the other stations usually had their broadcasts in the evenings, and that really set RRI apart. Back then, I had studied World History as a part of my school curriculum and whenever I located places on the European map, I learnt to mark other places, mostly in the South Eastern Europe with respect to Romania and Bucharest and other places in Romania.  Relating to Romanian landscapes was easier as we had always read a lot of Romanian folklore just like we learnt Indian folklore. Winning this contest will be a dream come true for young and new listeners like me.”

Anniversary Contest of Radio Romania 85

85 years ago, on 1st November 1928, at 17:00 hours local time, the first official radio broadcast was aired in Romania. It was the start of the great adventure of Romanian radio broadcasting. And Radio Romania International is very proud to be a part of the Romanian public radio family.

The beginnings of radio broadcasting in Romania and the first official radio transmission are linked to the name of Dragomir Hurmuzescu (1865-1954), a physicist and corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, recognized by many other scientific bodies from Romania and abroad. Professor Hurmuzescu subsequently became the president of the “Radiotelephonic Broadcasting Society” of Romania, today the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation.

At present Radio Romania’s fundamental activities consist of radio broadcasts (produced and broadcast by the corporation’s national, international, regional, local, on-line only channels), content provided by specialized website channels, radio drama as well as concerts and recitals by the corporation’s Choirs and Orchestras. Apart from that, Radio Romania also organizes book fairs and capitalizes on parts of its tape library and written archives by means of the “Casa Radio” publishers.

The corporation’s wide range of channels includes Radio Romania News and Current Affairs, Radio Romania Culture, Radio Village Antenna, Radio Romania Music, Radio Romania International, regional and local stations grouped under Radio Romania Regional, with headquarters in the cities of Bucharest, Cluj Napoca, Timisoara, Iasi, Craiova, Targu Mures, Resita, Constanta, Sibiu, Brasov, Sighetu Marmatiei and Arad, as well as on-line stations such as Radio3net and Radio Romania Junior. Beginning on 1 December 2011, Radio Chisinau, a station of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation, came on the air, covering two thirds of the Republic of Moldova. The Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation also offers two specialized websites, www.politicaromaneasca.ro and www.eteatru.ro.

You are invited to take part in this contest by listening to RRI broadcasts, on air on short wave, on-line at www.rri.ro and following our profiles on Facebook, Twitter and Flickr. Give correct answers, in writing, to the contest questions and you can be a winner. The contest will come to an end on 30th June 2013, mailing date.

The grand prize for the winners is a 10-day (9- night) trip with full board, for two, between 15th and 24th of September 2013, in 3 areas of Romania covered by Radio Romania’s Regional channels- namely the counties of Gorj, Timis and Cluj.

The sponsor of the contest is SC Boca Junior SRL of Timisoara. The partners of this contest are the Gorj County Council, the Association ‘Cluj Napoca 2020- European Capital of Culture’, the Timis County Council, the Cluj Napoca City Hall, the Cluj and Gorj branches of the Fine Artists Union, and the Association of Cluj Traditional Craftsmen.

As usual, the winners will have to provide for their transportation to and from Romania, and secure a visa if applicable. We also have other prizes and honorable mentions provided by our partners consisting of objects from the three aforementioned areas.

Winners of RRI's Contest "Romania's Salt Mine Spas"

Hello and welcome to this special edition of Traveler’s Guide devoted to the winners of the contest “Romania’s Salt Mine Spas” which ran on RRI between September 15th 2012 and February 28th 2013. The contest focused on one of Romania’s main mineral resources, salt, which has both economic and health importance, given the therapeutic qualities of salty air.

The contest has proved to be of great interest to RRI’s listeners and we have received 429 correct answers! We thank you all very much for this and invite you to participate in other contests RRI will organize in the future.

The Grand Prize is a 10 day trip for two, with full board accommodation for 9 nights, between 15th and 24th May 2013, in four different areas in Romania that are famous for their salt mines: Slanic Prahova (in Prahova County), Targu Ocna (in Bacau County), Praid (in Harghita County) and Turda (in Cluj County).

The sponsors of our competition are SC Salina Turda Durgau SA and Pensiunea Elena and Motel Anda in Targu Ocna. Our contest partners are the Bacau County Council, the Prahova County Council, the Ploiesti City Hall, the Turda City Hall, the Harghita Intercommunity Development Association, the Metropolitan Bishopric of Cluj, Alba, Crisana and Maramures, The National Salt Company SA, including its branches in Targu Ocna, Slanic Prahova and Praid, as well as the Ploiesti, Bacau and Turda branches of the Union of Fine Artists, the Harghita County Cultural Centre, the Turda Municipal House of Culture, the Tudor Jarda Arts and the Crafts School in Cluj-Napoca. As always, I enjoyed taking part in the contest, because here in my country, Kenya, media houses rarely speak of Romania, and we know very little about this fascinating European country. What cheered me up is that Romania has salt reserves that will last one thousand years from now. However, what has impressed me most is the way in which these salt mines can be used to cure allergies, asthma and bronchitis, by inhaling air in the underground salt mines. Speleotherapy has stirred me up, since here in Kenya we have thousands of cases of allergies and asthma and bringing that technology to a country like Kenya will be of much use.”
